There is not one single person who would be on this earth without a mother. This distinction is celebrated every year in May, on the second Sunday of the month. Mothers tend to especially appreciate handmade gifts from their children, whether they are made at home, at school, at church, or somewhere else. Christian mothers generally enjoy Bible-based projects, as well.
It is a good idea to know your students – if a child does not have a mother at home, this could be a difficult project for them. However, it may be possible for the child to make a craft for a grandmother or other special woman in their life instead.
Footprints, Fingerprints and Handprints
Because children grow so quickly, using the handprints and footprints of children will make their Mother’s Day gift into a precious keepsake. There are many possibilities for this format, including:
- Use handprints as flowers to make a bouquet. This can be done with paint or by drawing around the hands and cutting them out. Footprints can be used as leaves, if the flower uses the handprints as petals rather than entire flowers.
- Footprints using colorful paint, on the opposite sides as usual (left on right and right on left) can be used to make a pretty butterfly. Leave a little room between for the body and draw a strong line around the outside to indicate the butterfly wings.
- Fingerprints in a circle around a button make a pretty flower.
- A handprint cut out of foam makes a pretty photo frame.
- If mom’s size is known, a t-shirt can be made with the child’s handprint and name – more than one child of the same mom can handprint the same shirt.
- An impression of a child’s hand in bakeable clay is a precious keepsake.
Photo-Based
Moms love to see pictures of their children, so including one in their Mother’s Day project adds a special touch!
- Use a photo, cut into a circle, as the middle of a construction-paper flower.
- Put a photo in a craft-stick frame, decorated by the child with paint, stickers, or similar items.
- Cut out a teacup shape just larger than an individually wrapped tea bag. Tape or staple the sides and bottom. Stick a photo to the front, on the tea bag, or on the tea bag’s tag. Slip the tea bag inside the teacup.
Bible Verses to Use for Mother’s Day Gifts
Scripture verses about mothers can be used with any project, but obviously some of the verses will jive better with some of the crafts than others.
- Exodus 20:12
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. - Proverbs 1:8-9
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. - Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 23:25
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. - Proverbs 31:25-28
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. - Proverbs 31:28-29
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. - John 19:26-27
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. - Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Resources
While most of these kits do not include Scripture in the project plan, it is easy to add a verse to most of these gifts.
Mommy and Me Memory Book Craft
This project creates a book with a foam cover which children and their mothers can fill with memories of things they enjoy together.
Foam Flower Wreath
The center flower in this foam wreath says, “God made the flowers and the honeybees. He blessed me with a Mother who loves and cares for me.” The flower hangs from a ribbon, and a verse can easily be added to the back.
Scratch Art Hearts
Kids can scratch patterns, their names, “Mom,” verses, or other fun things for Mom to hang where she can see it.
Decorate Your Own Plastic Mugs
A paper that slides in between two layers of this mug allows children to make a mug that perfectly fits their own mom. The paper can be preprinted, if desired, and colored, or children can use fingerprints, markers, colored pencils, stickers, or whatever else to personalize this mug for their mom.
Card Making Kit
Six cards and envelopes come with stickers, tape, buttons, ribbon, and rhinestones that can be used to create cards as desired.
Gift Bags
Preprinted gift bags are meant to be colored by the giver. 12 bags include three different designs and are 9 inches tall, 7.5 inches wide, and 3.5 inches deep.
Mother’s Day Craft Kit Assortment
These four craft kits include a flower bouquet, a jewelry box, a picture frame, and a mosaic sign.
Mother’s Day Stickers
These stickers can be used to decorate any card or gift being created for mom. Pastel colored stickers portray flowers, hearts, a mug, a grown, and “mom.”
Pull-Out Card
Scripture and/or a sweet message can be printed inside this cute card that children make out of foam pieces. Envelopes are included. The kit makes 12.
Heart Shaped Boxes
These heart-shaped 2” board boxes can be decorated with paint, paper, or stickers and tied with ribbon to make a pretty little gift box or keepsake box for Mom.
Stretched Canvas Photo Frame
Children can paint this frame in any way they desire, using handprints or designs of their own making, then insert a photo of themselves. The gift, when finished, is ready to hang where Mom can easily see it.
Handprint Flowers
Add a flower to each digit after cutting out the child’s handprint from the foam, making a fun handprint flower in a pot. The child’s name can be added to the top of the pot, and the lower part of the pot has the text, “I am like a flower That’s raised with love by you. You help me grow up big and strong. Mom, thanks for all you do!” There is room on the palm area or on the back of the project for a Bible verse to be added.
