The Gospel of John is a combination of a narrative history, parables, sermons, and oracles. Although the author is never mentioned in the book, a couple of factors suggest that John is identified as the author. First, the book names the author as the disciple “whom Jesus loved.” Second, most Christians at the time positively testified that John was the one who reclined on Jesus’ bosom — the disciple “whom Jesus loved.”
The purpose of John’s gospel is to show the deity of Christ rather than tell His life in a chronological narrative – “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31). The Gospel of John contains some of the most-quoted Bible verses:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16);
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)
