Interesting Facts about the Papacy

Four-Popes

1276 saw the reign of four different popes. First was Gregory X, who also died in that year. He was succeeded by Innocent V, who also introduced the wearing of the now-familiar white papal cassocks, a tradition of his Dominican order. Innocent, however, died five months later, and was succeeded by Adrian V. Adrian’s papacy was even shorter than his predecessor as he died five weeks later. His successor was John XXI, who was able to reign for a few more months until his untimely death in 1277 when he was crushed to death when his apartment collapsed.
